History and Significance

The Elephanta Caves are a network of sculpted caves located on Elephanta Island, in Mumbai Harbour, India. These caves are primarily dedicated to Hindu deities, and are renowned for their rock-cut sculptures and carvings. The island itself is situated around 11 kilometers to the east of the city of Mumbai, Maharashtra.

The origin of the caves remains a mystery, but they are estimated to date back to between the 5th and 8th centuries.
