About the Mississippi River

The Mississippi River is one of the longest river systems in the world and the chief river of the second-largest drainage system in North America. Flowing entirely in the United States, it is a vital waterway for transportation and commerce. The river spans approximately 2,350 miles (3,782 km) from its source at Lake Itasca in Minnesota to its mouth in the Gulf of Mexico.

The river flows through ten states: Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois, Missouri, Kentucky, Tennessee, Arkansas, Mississippi, and Louisiana. It serves not only as a source of water but also supports a wide range of wildlife, aquatic life, and provides numerous recreational opportunities.
