An Orchestral Masterpiece by Igor Stravinsky

Igor Stravinsky

About the Symphony

The Symphony of Psalms is a choral symphony written by Igor Stravinsky in 1930. It was commissioned by the Boston Symphony Orchestra to celebrate its 50th anniversary.

The symphony is unique in its inclusion of a full chorus and its use of textual sources from the Latin Vulgate – passages from the Psalms 38, 39, and 150.

Structure & Style

The composition is divided into three movements:

  1. Exaudi orationem meam (Psalm 38: hear my prayer)
  2. Exspectans exspectavi Dominum (Psalm 39: I waited patiently for the Lord)
  3. Laudate Dominum (Psalm 150: praise the Lord)

Stravinsky's work is noted for its brilliant instrumentation, rhythmical complexity, and spiritual depth.
