Overview
Coral reefs are among the most beautiful and biologically diverse ecosystems on the planet. However, they are increasingly threatened by the effects of climate change. Rising sea temperatures, ocean acidification, and other environmental changes pose a significant threat to their survival.
Rising Sea Temperatures
As global temperatures rise, so do sea temperatures. This leads to coral bleaching, where the symbiotic algae living within corals are expelled, causing the corals to turn white and become more susceptible to disease.
Ocean Acidification
The ocean absorbs approximately one third of the carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere, leading to ocean acidification. This process decreases the pH level of the water and affects the ability of corals to build their skeletons.
How You Can Help
There are several ways you can contribute to saving coral reefs:
- Reduce your carbon footprint 🌍
- Avoid using harmful sunscreens when swimming near reefs 🏖️
- Support and volunteer with conservation organizations 🤝
