About the Geology of the Rockies

The Rocky Mountains, often referred to as the Rockies, are a major mountain range located in western North America. This great chain of mountains stretches more than 3,000 miles from western Canada all the way to the southern United States.

Formed between 55 and 80 million years ago, the Rockies are packed with fascinating rock formations, minerals, and fossils. The uplift of the mountains is largely due to tectonic activity and erosion.
