Ferdinand Magellan was a Portuguese explorer who is best known for leading the first expedition to circumnavigate the globe. Born in 1480, Magellan's ambition and pioneering spirit inspired a journey that would change the world.

The Journey Begins

In 1519, funded by Spain, Magellan set sail with five ships, searching for a western sea route to the Spice Islands. Although Magellan himself did not survive the entire voyage, the expedition proved that the earth is round and much of it is covered by ocean, radically altering the European understanding of the world.
