About Ferdinand Magellan
Ferdinand Magellan, a Portuguese explorer, led the first expedition to sail around the world. His journey proved that the Earth is round and much larger than previously thought.
This expedition was funded by Spain and started in 1519 with a fleet of five ships. Although Magellan himself didn't complete the journey, as he was killed in the Battle of Mactan in the Philippines, his expedition successfully completed the first known voyage around the globe.
