Life and Legacy

Ferdinand Magellan (1480 – 1521) was a Portuguese explorer who led the first expedition to circumnavigate the globe. He played a vital role in the age of exploration and is remembered as one of history's greatest navigators. His expedition, although not completed by him personally, proved once and for all that the Earth is round and that the vast oceans are interconnected.

Magellan embarked on his journey in 1519 with five ships, aiming to find a westward route to the Spice Islands. His extraordinary journey took him from Spain across the Atlantic, down the coast of South America, and through what is now known as the Strait of Magellan. The fleet eventually reached the Philippines, where Magellan met his untimely death in 1521. However, his spirit of adventure and exploration lives on.
