History of the Colosseum
Built almost 2,000 years ago, the Colosseum remains one of the world's most magnificent architectural feats. 🌍 Originally known as the Flavian Amphitheatre, it was commissioned in AD 72 by Emperor Vespasian of the Flavian dynasty and completed in AD 80 by his son Titus.
This grand structure was used for gladiatorial contests, public spectacles, and dramatic plays based on Classical mythology. It's said that the games, often grotesque, served as a distraction and a way to keep the citizens of Rome entertained.
Architectural Marvel
The Colosseum's architectural design is as innovative today as it was in ancient times. It could hold between 50,000 and 80,000 spectators, featuring a complex system of vaults and corridors enabling efficient movement in and out of the amphitheatre. ⚒️
