Mount Vesuvius is one of the most well-known volcanoes in the world, located in the Gulf of Naples, Italy. It is famous for its catastrophic eruption in 79 AD that led to the destruction and burial of the Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum.
This majestic stratovolcano stands approximately 1,281 meters (4,203 feet) high and has a semi-circular ridge, known as Monte Somma, which is part of a caldera that was formed around 17,000 years ago. The volcano remains one of the most active in the world, having erupted numerous times since the disaster of 79 AD.
