The Moon in Native American Traditions
The moon has always played a significant role in Native American mythology. It often represents timekeeping, fertility, and change. Various tribes told stories to explain the lunar cycles, and many continue these traditions to this day.
🐺 The Great Wolf
Some tribes, like the Cheyenne, tell of a Great Wolf who chases the moon across the sky, creating the phases of the moon as he occasionally catches up to it.
🐢 Turtle Island
In the Lenape (Delaware) culture, it is believed that the world is carried on the back of a giant turtle, and its shell markings symbolize the lunar calendar.
