Lunar Legends: Jade Rabbit

The Tale of the Jade Rabbit

Long ago, as the story goes, the Jade Emperor sought a creature to live on the moon and make a concoction of immortality. The animals, hearing of this grand opportunity, were eager to take part. Among them were a courageous rabbit, a wise monkey, and a kind fox.

The emperor, disguised as an old man, tested the animals by asking for food. The fox brought fish from the river, the monkey gathered fruits from the trees, but the rabbit had nothing to offer but grass. Finally, the rabbit humbly said, "I have nothing worthwhile to give you. Take me instead." Moved by the rabbit's selflessness, the emperor chose the rabbit to inhabit the moon.

This is why, on clear nights, one can see the Jade Rabbit on the moon, busily pounding medicine with its mortar and pestle, embodying sacrifice and compassion. 🌕🐇
