Legend has it that on clear nights, you might spot the silhouette of a rabbit on the moon, busy making the Elixir of Life. Many cultures, from Chinese to Aztec, have variations of this enchanting tale.
In Chinese folklore, the Moon Rabbit is a companion to the Moon goddess Chang'e, endlessly pounding potions of immortality in a celestial mortar. Similarly, Japanese folklore tells of a rabbit offering itself to a starving old man, who was actually a deity. As a reward, the deity placed the rabbit on the Moon.
