The first Oktoberfest was celebrated in 1810 to mark the wedding of Crown Prince Ludwig of Bavaria to Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen. The citizens of Munich were invited to join in the royal festivities, which included a horse race. This event was held in the fields in front of the city gates, which were eventually named Theresienwiese ("Theresa's Meadow") in honor of the crown princess.
