A beautiful blend of cultures and nature.
Réunion Island, a French overseas department located in the Indian Ocean, was first discovered by Portuguese navigators in the early 16th century. However, it was the French who claimed the island in the 17th century, naming it Île Bourbon.
The French East India Company took control, and settlers began to arrive, establishing coffee, sugar, and spice plantations. The island's demography grew diverse with the arrival of enslaved people, indentured laborers, and migrants from India, China, and Africa.
In 1946, Réunion's status changed from a colony to a department of France. Today, it is a diverse region with a rich cultural tapestry and breathtaking landscapes.
This curious little froge has been hopping through the island's history!
