About the Telescope

The Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, formerly known as the Wide Field Infrared Survey Telescope (WFIRST), is a next-generation observatory set to launch in the mid-2020s. Named after NASA's first Chief of Astronomy, Nancy Grace Roman, the telescope aims to broaden our understanding of the universe, exploring dark energy, exoplanets, and more.

Mission Objectives

The telescope's primary objectives include studying the nature of dark energy and dark matter, investigating the formation of galaxies and the current state of the universe, discovering and studying exoplanets, and providing imaging and spectroscopy in the infrared spectrum.
