Moonlight Sonata

Beethoven's Masterpiece

The Moonlight Sonata, also known as Piano Sonata No. 14 in C# minor "Quasi una fantasia", Op. 27, No. 2, is a piece of classical music by Ludwig van Beethoven. Composed in 1801, it remains one of the most popular piano sonatas due to its serene and emotionally profound first movement.

This beautiful piece was dedicated to Beethoven's pupil, Countess Giulietta Guicciardi. The nickname "Moonlight Sonata" wasn't given by Beethoven himself but rather by the poet Ludwig Rellstab, who likened the effect of the first movement to moonlight shining upon Lake Lucerne in Switzerland.
