Tony Allen was a Nigerian musician and songwriter, best known as the drummer and musical director of Fela Kuti's band Africa '70. He is regarded as one of the primary co-founders of the genre referred to as Afrobeat, a blend of traditional African drumming styles and jazz.
Born in Lagos on August 12, 1940, Allen's innovative drumming became the backbone of Afrobeat. Brian Eno once described Tony Allen as "arguably the greatest drummer who has ever lived."
Beyond his work with Fela Kuti, Tony Allen had a prolific solo career and collaborated with various artists across different musical genres. He passed away on April 30, 2020, leaving a timeless legacy of rhythm and sound.
