USS Constitution

The Legendary Old Ironsides

The USS Constitution, known affectionately as "Old Ironsides," is a wooden-hulled, three-masted heavy frigate of the United States Navy. Commissioned in 1797, she is the world's oldest ship still afloat!

The USS Constitution earned her nickname during the War of 1812 when British cannonballs were seen bouncing off her thick hull as if they were made of iron. A symbol of American naval prowess, she has become a patriotic symbol, celebrated in song and story.
