The Wonders of Frog Respiration

How Frogs Breathe through Their Skin

Frogs are fascinating creatures, not only because of their leap and vibrant colors but also due to their unique respiratory system. Unlike many other animals, frogs can breathe through their skin. This process is known as cutaneous respiration.

During cutaneous respiration, the skin of frogs must remain moist. This moisture allows oxygen to pass through their thin skin into blood vessels, directly providing their bloodstream with necessary oxygen. During this time, carbon dioxide is also expelled directly through the skin.

Frogs also have lungs, like humans, which they use primarily when they are very active or when they are out of water. However, during times of rest or while submerged in water, their skin takes over most of the respiratory duties.
