Basic Neuron Function
Neurons are the fundamental units of the brain and nervous system, responsible for receiving sensory input, sending motor commands, and transforming and relaying electrical signals at various synapses.
Neuronal Structure
Each neuron contains a cell body (soma), dendrites, and an axon. Dendrites receive signals, while axons send them, sometimes over long distances, allowing neurons to communicate rapidly and precisely.
Synapses and Signal Transmission
Neurons communicate with one another via synapses. When an electrical signal reaches a synapse, it triggers the release of neurotransmitters, which cross the synaptic gap and bind to receptors on the receiving neuron, continuing the transmission process.
