Crime and Punishment is a novel by the Russian author Fyodor Dostoevsky, first published in the literary journal The Russian Messenger in a monthly series in 1866.

It focuses on the mental anguish and moral dilemmas faced by the protagonist, Rodion Raskolnikov, a poor ex-student in Saint Petersburg who formulates a plan to kill a pawnbroker for her cash. Raskolnikov believes that with the money, he could liberate himself from poverty and continue his education.
