Protein Synthesis - Stage 1: Transcription
Welcome to the fascinating world of protein synthesis! This is the first stage, called Transcription, during which the information in a gene's DNA is transferred to a RNA molecule.
In transcription, the DNA sequence of a gene is transcribed (copied out) to make an RNA molecule. This process occurs in the nucleus of eukaryotic cells and in the cytoplasm of prokaryotic cells.
Steps of Transcription
- Initiation: RNA polymerase binds to the promoter region of the gene.
- Elongation: RNA polymerase moves along the DNA template, adding nucleotides to extend the growing RNA strand.
- Termination: The RNA polymerase reaches a stop sequence and the completed RNA strand is released.
