Biography

William Shakespeare, widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language and the world's greatest dramatist, was born in 1564 in Stratford-upon-Avon, England. Shakespeare's work, including iconic plays like Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, and Macbeth, has transcended his own time to become one of the cornerstones of world literature.

Though little is known about his early life, or “The Lost Years” as they are known, he emerged as a playwright and actor in London by the late 1580s. Shakespeare was a member of the Lord Chamberlain’s Men, a company of actors, and later one of the shareholders of the Globe Theatre.

Shakespeare married Anne Hathaway, with whom he had three children. He died in 1616 and was buried in Stratford-upon-Avon's Holy Trinity Church.
