Understanding Acids
Acids are substances that release hydrogen ions (H+) when dissolved in water. They have a sour taste, turn blue litmus paper red, and they react with bases to form water and salts.
Examples of Acids:
- Hydrochloric Acid (HCl)
- Sulfuric Acid (H2SO4)
- Acetic Acid (CH3COOH)
Exploring Bases
Bases are substances that release hydroxide ions (OH-) in solution. They have a bitter taste, feel slippery, and change red litmus paper to blue.
Examples of Bases:
- Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH)
- Potassium Hydroxide (KOH)
- Ammonia (NH3)
