About Archimedes

Archimedes of Syracuse (c. 287 – c. 212 BC) was a Greek mathematician, physicist, engineer, inventor, and astronomer. He is considered one of the greatest mathematicians of all time and made numerous contributions to the fields of mathematics, physics, and engineering.

Archimedes is famous for his discovery of the relation between the surface and volume of a sphere and its circumscribing cylinder, as well as the formulations of the principle of the lever and the Archimedes screw.
