The Magna Carta

The Magna Carta, or "Great Charter", is a significant legal document that was signed in 1215 by King John of England. It was created to make peace between the unpopular King and a group of rebel barons. The charter promised the protection of church rights, protection for the barons from illegal imprisonment, access to swift justice, and limitations on feudal payments to the Crown.

Historical Significance

The Magna Carta is often cited as one of the earliest documents establishing the idea that the monarch was subject to the law, rather than above it. It has served as an inspiration for many constitutional documents following it, including the United States Constitution.
