Who was Montesquieu?
Charles-Louis de Secondat, Baron de La Brède et de Montesquieu, (1689–1755) was a French judge, man of letters, and political philosopher. His famous work, The Spirit of Laws, was a major contribution to political theory, influencing the Founding Fathers of the United States and the construct of the separation of powers.
Montesquieu's philosophy celebrated liberty and a separation of governmental power. 🕊️ He believed that in order to avoid despotism, the powers of government should be divided among different bodies.
