What is a Polygon?
A polygon is a plane figure that is described by a finite number of straight line segments connected to form a closed polygonal chain or polygonal circuit. These segments are called the edges or sides, and the points where two edges meet are the vertices of the polygon. The term polygon is derived from the Greek words "poly," meaning "many," and "gonia," meaning "angle."
Types of Polygons
- Triangle - 3 sides
- Quadrilateral - 4 sides
- Pentagon - 5 sides
- Hexagon - 6 sides
- Heptagon - 7 sides
- Octagon - 8 sides
Polygon Properties
Polygons have various properties based on the number of sides and angles:
- Consecutive sides of a polygon meet at vertices.
- The sum of the interior angles of a polygon is determined by the formula: (n-2) × 180°, where n is the number of sides.
