The Gadfly of Athens
Socrates is one of the most renowned philosophers of ancient Greece, credited as one of the founders of Western philosophy. He is known for his contribution to the field of ethics and his method of questioning to stimulate critical thinking, famously known as the Socratic method.
Socrates lived from 470 to 399 BC in Athens. He did not write any texts himself, and what we know of him comes from the accounts of later classical writers, especially his students Plato and Xenophon. His ideas revolutionized ancient and modern thinking, focusing on the importance of the human condition, self-examination, and moral philosophy.
